Tesla Will Build The Largest Backup Power Supply System For LA In History

Tesla has been selected to construct the biggest lithium-ion battery solution in the world near Los Angeles. The company says, "It will hold enough energy to power more than 2,500 households for a day or charge 1,000 Tesla vehicles. The idea to construct the facility comes after the recent methane gas leakage in Los Angeles at the Aliso Canyon natural gas facility, which was one of the largest environmental disasters in United States history. The leakage moved 8,000 California inhabitants and caused the environmental destruction than the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The leakage went on for months before it was finally plugged.

One of the undocumented problems is that now Los Angeles does not have electricity facility to power the city for the period of peak demand, and it puts the Los Angeles basin unexpectedly at a threat of rolling power cuts as winter approaches. After the leakage, California governor Jerry Brown indicated a state of emergency and the California Public Utilities Commission rapidly began the process of obtaining a standby energy solution.

Eventually, Tesla was selected to construct a 20 Mega Watt/80 MWh Power-pack facility. The most remarkable part of it is that Tesla declares it will have the Power-pack all set and functional in just three months, thanks a lot to the company’s huge Gigafactory. The Power-pack will not be in LA precisely, but at the Southern California Edison Mira Loma substation, around 40 miles away from Los Angeles.

Tesla said in a statement,"The Gigafactory’s capability to create at a large scale will allow this system to be manufactured, sent, installed and commissioned in just three months. The system will charge by electricity from the grid in off-peak hours and then supply electricity during peak hours to support and continue the steadfast operation of Southern California Edison’s electrical structure which serves more than 15 million inhabitants. By doing so, the Tesla Power-pack system will decrease the need for electricity produced by natural gas and further the improvement of a resilient and modern grid".

This is all part of Tesla’s master plan to construct large-scale energy way out. The company recently developed SolarCity, a solar energy company made by Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk. Southern California is especially a difficult market for energy companies, and hence, a great testing ground for Tesla’s concepts. Musk, it appears, means business.
