NASA Announces Historic Mission To Send Probe To 'Touch The Sun'

NASA just announced that they’re launching a ‘Solar Plus Probe’ to touch the Sun Surface. A revolutionary new mission which will study the internal working of the Sun.

The mission is planned to launch in 2018 and will collect data about the Sun’s outermost atmosphere generally known as the ‘Corona’ where temperatures can reach up to 0.5 million Celsius, which is much higher than the temperature in the sun’s core.






The probe will be packed full of very sensitive measuring apparatus and equipment, as well as a white light imager, called ‘the Whisper’, that will take photographs of the solar waves as the Solar Plus Probe’ flies through them.
It will also bring instruments to measure bulk plasma, so-called 'the bread and butter' of solar waves, and a full collection of magnetic calculating equipment.

Nicola Fox explains (briefly) how the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) will slowly 'surf' closer and closer to the star, into the ‘Corona’. The probe will have to bear more than 13 thousand degree heat.

 She said, “We will finally touch the sun.”

Professor Kolk explains how the idea of investigating the Sun up-close was first raised at the University of Chicago (UOC) in 1958.

"So many important questions about the solar wind stay unanswered," he says.
The last time a man-made space probe tried to get close to the sun it only got to within 27,00,000 miles.  This was in 1972.

The data collected by this spacecraft will expand forecasts of main space weather events (similar to solar winds) that influence life on Earth, satellites and astronauts in space.
