NASA news: Astronaut Christina Koch took this beautiful image of Salt Lake ponds in the US

NASA’s astronaut orbits the planet 16 times in a single day from a height of about 250 miles (402km) in space. The International Space Station (ISS) serves as an orbital laboratory and workplace to the six astronauts who call it home for months at a time. As the ISS hurtles around the planet, each orbit spends 45 minutes in the darkness of night and 45 minutes in the glow of daytime.

During these brief windows of daytime, astronauts like Christina Koch have an opportunity to take beautiful snapshots of Earth.

On Monday, September 16, the NASA astronaut shared from space four vivid pictures of Australia, France, Iran and the US.

The photos were taken with a long telephoto lens, focusing on intricate and geometric shapes dotting the Earth’s surface.

The astronaut tweeted from the ISS: “A little #MondayMotivation and #EarthArt from @Space_Station to brighten to your day. From above: Australia, Iran, France and America.

The first photo shows a series of green and red rectangles and other angular shapes next to a body of water.

The colorful shapes are solar evaporation ponds on the Great Salt Lake in Utah, US.

The next picture closely resembles the texture of brown marble or a mineral rock.

The astronaut’s third picture shows a coastal city on the edge of azure blue waters and deep-red fields.

For the last photo, Mrs. Koch snapped an image of geometric white roads crisscrossing plots of land with trees and vegetation.

Before these pictures were taken, Mrs. Koch also snapped a photo of New York City on September 12, to commemorate the anniversary of the 2001 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

The astronaut snapped an image of the city’s glow at night.

She tweeted from space: “The Tribute in Light shines even into space.

The crew of the @Space_Station stands with you honouring those who were affected and those whose unbreakable spirit continues to shine the light. #TributeInLight #NeverForget.
